Frequently Asked Questions About Aging-in-Place Remodeling
What Is Aging-in-Place Remodeling?
At its core, aging in place means creating a home environment that allows you to live safely, comfortably, and independently for as long as possible. While the term is sometimes used incorrectly, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has a specific definition for "Aging in Place" in home design and construction.
While the concept is simple, the execution can vary widely. Each home and homeowner is different, which means aging-in-place remodeling projects are tailored to your specific needs, lifestyle, and long-term goals.
Should You Age in Place or Move?
Deciding whether to stay in your current home or move is a personal decision, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. However, if you love your location, your neighborhood, and the home you have built your life around, investing in an aging-in-place remodel can be a smart and practical solution.
Rather than starting over somewhere new, you can adapt your existing home to better support your needs, improve accessibility, and maintain the comfort and familiarity you already enjoy.
How Do You Find the Best Aging-in-Place Remodeling Contractor?
Choosing the right contractor is one of the most important parts of the process. Not all remodelers have experience with aging-in-place design, so it is important to look for proven expertise.
One key indicator is Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) certification, which shows that a contractor has specialized training in designing and building spaces that support safety, accessibility, and long-term living.
Beyond certifications, look for a contractor with a clear process, strong communication, and experience delivering aging-in-place remodeling projects similar to yours.
How Much Does Aging-in-Place Remodeling Cost?
Many homeowners assume that aging-in-place remodeling comes at a premium, but that is not always the case.
Projects like aging-in-place kitchen, bathroom, and primary bedroom remodels often do not cost significantly more than traditional remodels. In many cases, the difference comes down to how the space is designed, not entirely different materials or construction methods.
Features such as improved layouts, better lighting, and accessible configurations are often incorporated during the design phase. This means you can create a home that supports long-term comfort and independence without dramatically increasing your overall investment.
Do Aging-in-Place Modifications Impact Home Value?
Home modifications for aging in place can increase the value of your home, especially when they are well-designed and align with the overall style of the space.
These types of aging-in-place remodeling upgrades can also make your home more appealing to potential buyers by offering added convenience, accessibility, and safety. Features commonly found in aging-in-place home design, such as improved layouts and accessible bathrooms or kitchens, are increasingly desirable for homeowners planning for long-term living.

"Blackdog Design/Build/Remodel recently completed a comprehensive renovation of our home. Overall, we had a positive experience. The project finished ahead of schedule and took about a year from start to finish. We chose Blackdog because of their experience with full-scale renovations. Our designer, Ron, has a background as a carpenter, which was helpful during the design phase. He understood both the design side and the practical construction side, and our meetings with him were always productive. He also suggested a few aging-in-place features, like grab bars and crank windows. During the design process, we needed to select tile and grout for the bathrooms and kitchen. We went next door to FloorMe and worked with Jamie. She was very patient and helped us compare grout colors so they matched well with the floor tiles, wall tiles, and backsplashes. Once construction started, communication stayed strong. Our lead carpenter, Mark, provided daily progress updates and photos, which made it easy to keep track of what was happening. Mark’s carpentry skills are excellent, and he was able to complete tasks efficiently and with great attention to detail. Our project manager, Jason, handled scheduling and coordination with the various trades. The MEP contractors hired by Blackdog to work on the house were professional and skilled.
A renovation like this involves a lot of moving parts, but the team kept things moving and ultimately delivered a house we are happy with. It’s been great finally settling into the finished space. Overall, we would recommend Blackdog to homeowners in New England looking for an experienced design-build firm for a major renovation."
"Blackdog is a top-notch outfit... we had a major renovation at our home. We had never done any work of this magnitude, but from design to renovation never felt uncomfortable or out of touch with where things stood. We felt like we had full control through the whole process, and when things did come up (as they do in any renovation), we were given our options in a transparent way. I would definitely recommend them."
"Blackdog just completed a complete remodel of our master bathroom, including expansion into an adjacent closet. We were extremely pleased with the entire process, including the numerous hours that Melissa spent with us on the optimal layout and design. She carefully listened to all our wishes while providing additional creative ideas and alternatives, and helped us in picking out matching tiles, flooring, etc. There are so many options that it can be overwhelming, but Melissa streamlined it all into a manageable process.
Our project manager, Bree, was just outstanding. She planned out the entire project so it was completed very efficiently with no unexpected delays. The lead carpenter was very talented and kept the work area organized and clean throughout the process. The subcontractors that Bree engaged were always on time, and their work was of the highest quality, particularly the flooring and tile guys. This is the third project (bathrooms, kitchen, addition, etc) that Blackdog has completed for us over the last 20 years, and we have always been pleased with the outcome.
While they may not be the lowest cost provider, you generally get what you pay for in home improvements, and Blackdog’s inclusive process leads to great design, quality craftsmanship, and very few, if any, surprises along the way. We would highly recommend Blackdog for all of your home improvement needs."
