Solving Layout Challenges in a Kitchen Remodel

A kitchen is the heart of your home, but when the layout is inefficient, it can quickly become a frustrating space. Issues like cramped workflows, limited storage, or tight spaces can make everyday tasks feel like a hassle.

At Blackdog Design/Build, we frequently tackle layout challenges in kitchen remodels. New Hampshire and Massachusetts are home to many older homes, some of which were built as early as the 1700s. While these are beautiful spaces, they come with unique challenges that require an experienced remodeler.

In this blog post, we’re sharing a stunning kitchen renovation designed and built by our Salem team. With thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship, and high-quality materials from Tedd Wood Fine Cabinetry and soapstone countertops, this kitchen went from challenging to exceptional.

A well-thought-out kitchen layout can make all the difference in your kitchen. Although your current kitchen layout may have been perfect for another family, it may not work for yours. As time goes by, homeowners' needs change, which is why every home presents unique challenges.

With the right design-build team, those challenges can become opportunities for creative solutions. In our recent remodel in Andover, Massachusetts, our designer worked closely with the homeowners to ensure they were getting the most out of their home's square footage.

Identifying the Challenges

Remodeled kitchen with wood floors, woodgrain island with black/gray stone countertop and small sink in the middle with brushed gold faucet.Awkward flow: One common issue in older kitchens is an awkward flow. Historically, kitchens were designed as functional spaces rather than gathering spots, often with limited counter space. As modern lifestyles have evolved, so have kitchen layouts, requiring more open designs.

Limited storage: A lack of cabinetry or counter space typically indicates an older kitchen design. This is one of the first things we correct when approaching a project.

Poor lighting and aesthetics: Dark, cramped spaces usually require a refresh. Although the kitchen shown on the left had a window, by tearing out the center wall, we doubled the space and doubled the light entering it.

The Design Solution

Tackling layout challenges requires a lot of collaboration and design skills, and our designer created a space that solved these issues and elevated the entire kitchen. Removing the wall that separated the kitchen from the pantry significantly improved the layout. We also added an island featuring additional storage.

Using semi-custom cabinetry from Tedd Wood Fine Cabinetry, we maximized every inch of available space. Smart storage solutions like pull-out drawers, deep cabinets, and built-in organizers eliminated clutter and made it easier to keep the space clean.

Every detail, from framing the archways to installing the cabinetry, was handled with expert craftsmanship.

The Final Transformation

Elegant arches: The new design features soft arches that enhance both flow and elegance.

Soapstone countertop: The soapstone countertop adds depth and visual contrast while providing a durable, heat-resistant surface. It’s very dramatic, elevating the entire space.

Flooring by FloorMe!: Our friends at FloorMe! in Nashua, NH, did a fantastic job designing and installing new, high-quality hardwood flooring. The flooring complements the kitchen’s overall design and ties the space together.
